Global Learning Activities

The Global Learning Medallion Program hosts a variety of events to help students gain insight and expand their global awareness and global perspective. During my time in the GLM program I had the opportunity to attend these events and hear from a variety of guest speakers.

TTR: Importance of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the Workplace

The TTR: Importance of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the Workplace presented by Dr. Emmanuele Bowles discussed how important it is to have representation in the work place and the need for an open conversation on race so as a community we can grow and learn from one another. Dr. Bowles also spoke on what to look for when going into a professional career and how to identify if a company has made diversity and inclusion a priority in their workplace.

Collaborative Online Learning (COIL): COIL Student Panel

COIL connects students from FIU with other students from universities across the world and allows them to collaborate and share their diverse perspectives. In this panel the guest speakers were FIU students who had taken a COIL course and relayed their experience working with students outside of the U.S. The students on the panel said the experience was enriching and even though there were language barriers, time zones, and cultural differences it gave them an opportunity to collaborate with people they never would have before.

TTR: Photographic Storytelling & Our Stories: Summer 2020

This event was hosted by Enrique Rosell the Honors College Program Coordinator and Andrea Fanta the Faculty Fellow from the Wolfsonian Public Humanities Lab. Summer of 2020 students were give a disposable camera and told to capture their life during the pandemic in 2020. In a world where pictures are no longer limited to the space on a roll of film students had to be mindful of the pictures they took and had to wait for the film developed to see their photos. During the event we saw some of the pictures that students took with their disposable camera and each photo told a unique story. The photos felt more personal with a disposable camera and would not have made the same impact had they been taken with a digital camera or cellphone.

Cafecito Chat: Young Womxn's Impact in the 305: Bringing the SDGs Home

In this week's Cafecito Chat we were introduced to four incredible women who are leading and transforming our local and global community. It was inspiring to learn about the various accomplishments these young women have achieved at FIU and the positive impact they've left for the communities in South Florida.
